Getting Personal: Books and Movies!

I’m still recovering from Vegas, so I’m going to do another Getting Personal post for now.

So far, all the questions I’ve gotten on Formspring (as a result of my call for personal questions) have all been media-related, so that’s what this post will be about!

One person asked, “What books have you read recently?”
When I was a kid, reading was all I did. I always had a book that I was in the middle of. Sometimes two or three. This remained true through the beginning of college, but it was somewhere around there that things began to change. I don’t know if it’s the millions of pages of things I had to read in college or because I changed my major to English for a semester and so had four English classes worth of novels, short stories, and poems crammed into one semester, but I stopped reading for fun. I’m really sad about this. I will occasionally pick up a book, start it, and then never finish it. Maybe I just haven’t been picking up books that I really get into? I don’t know.

The last book I actually finished was “Animal Farm” last summer. I loved it. I also loved that it was short so that I could actually finish it.

Books I’ve started in the past year and haven’t finished? The list is long: “Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister”, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, “Nutureshock” (which there’s actually a funny story as to why I own this, but I should perhaps save that for a future post?), several business-related books…there’s probably more but you get the point. Occasionally I’ll pick up a book I own that I’ve read before, thinking I can surely get through something that I’ve enjoyed in the past, but no. I just can’t ever seem to find the time to sit down and read, even though I know that time exists since I manage to beat video games…

Another question! “What movies are you looking forward to this year?”
Truthfully, none so far. The movies I tend to like usually come out in fall/early winter because I like critically-acclaimed dramas more than anything, and they tend to be released with all the Oscar contenders. So I’ll have to revisit this question as the year goes on.

Some movies that are already out, but I’m looking forward to seeing? “Rabbit Hole”, “Love and Other Drugs”, “Nowhere Boy” (sad I missed this when it was at the Belcourt but I opted to go see “I Love You Philip Morris” instead), and “Welcome to the Riley’s” among others.

A related question…”What are your favorite movies?”
I love movies. I’ve probably seen too many of them. I saw nine in theatres last year, and so far have already seen two in theatres this year. (This doesn’t sound like a lot to my high school self who had friends working at the movie theatre and let me in for free to movies all the time, but it does to my college self who had no money to go to see things in theatres.) My Netflix account gets used a lot.

First and foremost, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” is my favorite. “Requiem for a Dream” is my second favorite. My third favorite is “Almost Famous”. The rest I’m not very good at numbering, so I’ll just list a bunch: “(500) Days of Summer”, “Garden State”, “Wall-E”, “The Princess Bride”, “Moulin Rouge”, “Office Space”, “Paris, je t’aime”, “The Family Man”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Let the Right One In” (so much better than the remake).

My favorites from last year are “Black Swan” and “Tangled”.

And, uh, since we’re talking about movies, here’s a photo I did of a scene from “The Shining”…except with eggs…

So, now, I want to know: what are your favorite movies?
